  • Tag someone who would love to visit Edinburgh, Scotland! How lovely is this by @starkpix of the wonderful Circus Lane... what fantastic atmosphere! This is just a wee evening update, see this mornings post for today's featured story. . This gorgeous mews is in the historic New Town sandwiched ideally between the large Georgian town houses and the village of Stockbridge. Stockbridge takes its name from the Scots words "stoccbrycg" meaning a timber foot bridge after the original bridge that crossed the Water of Leith to the small village. Interestingly, the original Mrs Doubtfire or "Madame Doubtfire" lived and ran a rag and bone shop in South East Circus Place, Stockbridge. She was the inspiration behind the novel by Anne Fine who also lived in the areawhich was in turn the inspiration for the movie starring the late, great, Robin Williams. . Have a great evening! • What's the weather like where you are? Comment below! I have to be honest with you, dear readers...The sun doesn't always shine in Britain. I know, I can tell that you're shocked. 😆 This lovely photo in the grounds of the 800-year-old Stokesay Castle by @madreonthemove is a prime example. Glorious green fields, bountiful wildflowers swaying in the breeze with a stunning historic building standing proud. But! Spot the looming rain cloud in the distance! Still, the plants do need a good water, and this month has been one of the driest on records. . This gorgeous gatehouse was built in 1641 right next to the Castle itself, which was built between 1280s and 1290s. The wonderful great hall is unchanged for over 700 years and visitors can even climb to the top of a fairy-tale tower for breath-taking views of the Shropshire Hills. Set amid peaceful countryside near the Welsh border, it forms an outstandingly picturesque group with its timber framed gatehouse and the parish church. Stokesay Castle was constructed at the end of the 13th century by Laurence of Ludlow, who at the time was one of the richest men in England. The gatehouse was threatened shortly after it was finished. In 1645 a group of Parliamentary soldiers surrounded the house. The owners surrendered without resistance, so Stokesay was spared any damage, leaving it essentially as it has been for over seven centuries. . Ahh the clouds have parted and the sun is out..time to hop on my bike and burn off all these scones I've been scoffing recently. • Tag a friend that needs to see stunning Oxford (and perhaps loves Harry Potter a little bit too!) Love this wonderful shot of the "Radcliffe Camera" library by @sophieannenadeau. How wonderfully cinematic is this! Oxford does have that extra special thing about it, and as every resident and tour guide will tell you, Oxford is about as close to Hogwarts as you’re going to get. In fact, tucked away inside the Oxford colleges are a number of locations used in the films. The dining hall in Christ Church College and the steps leading to it, for instance, were used in The Philosopher’s Stone. Harry also walks through the cloisters of New College in the Goblet of Fire; and Harry, Ron and Hermione conspire in the Hogwarts library, otherwise known as Duke Humphrey’s Medieval Library in the beautiful Bodleian. . The camera (the word means simply "room") was built 1737-1749 with £40,000 bequeathed by Dr John Radcliffe, the royal physician. Oxford University itself is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. Oh La La! Unlike London, Colchester, and Chester, the Romans pretty much ignored this area when they invaded Britain. Apparently they didn't like the way the natives put ferrets down their trousers. And who can blame them? Gorgeous shot by @sophieannenadeau 🇬🇧 Want your Photos of Britain to be featured? Follow us and tag us in the picture too! • The ground around Comely Bank, Edinburgh was originally part of Sir William Fettes' estate. The original development was a terrace of Georgian town-houses built to face the main east-west road leading to Stockbridge. This was designed by Thomas Brown (architect) in 1817 and still stands today. . 📸: Edinburgh by @karlsaunders_ . The Victorian writer Thomas Carlyle lived in Comely Bank Road between 1819 and 1821 before achieving literary success. At that time, the terrace at the western end of the road was the last row of houses in Edinburgh before the village of Blackhall. . Although there was a burst of tenemental construction in the late 19th century, due to other more prestiguous developments around the city the area was not fully built out until the 1930s. . • London is the capital of Great Britain.
