  • Our community is growing. We’re making an impact in towns that need brain and brawn. Professionals are leaving refreshed, with valuable perspectives on how to grow as leaders, and real plans of action for how to get there. Plenty of work to do, but for now, we’ll celebrate the present, this beautiful country, and all that Central America has to offer. ¡Pura Vida! . . #growth #recharge #career #leadership #sunset #photooftheday

  • This International Day of Biological Diversity, we'd like to show you that it is possible to run a profitable farm as well as protect and improve the environment. These pictures are from the farms we support in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. We support 60 farms in the region. They are designed according to Agri-Ecological principals, and provide naturally grown, healthy veg to local markets. #intbiodiversityday #biodiversity #agroecology

  • “I am an example of the failed education system in this country. I have done my masters in engineering but it still wasn’t enough to get me a stable job. My 45-day old son is fighting for his life in the ICU, and my sick father is waiting to receive his first grandchild at home. But I have no money left. I feel like I have failed as a father,” - Vikram - Vikram’s father is a retired army personnel who is a heart patient. He has taken Rs 4 lakhs as loan from his pension fund to help Vikram with expenses. The elderly gentleman has not even met his grandchild, but has given away his life’s worth for him. - ”If this is not love, I don’t know what is. My father has been really kind and supportive, despite him having a weak heart. He gave me the money saying, ‘Bring my grandchild home.’ But how do I do that? He thinks Rs 4 lakh is enough, but how do I tell him that it’s nothing at this point? I don’t want to lose my father too,”- Vikram - Vikram cannot afford Rs 18 lakhs that is required to fund his baby’s medical expenses. The baby boy is fighting hard but needs more comprehensive treatment and time to be fit for this world. • Sophy and Cherrie on our last visit out to the villages. This is Cherries last week in Cambodia for a while and I’ll stop talking in third person so I can attempt to convey the emotion behind what I’m about to say. It’s been nearly two years since this project first began while on a two week stint in Siem Reap. June 2016 was when I first met Nom and Sett. When I taught Sett how to make a bracelet, realizing I could provide her with her first experience of employment and purpose and the opportunity to provide for her mother - was a moment my life changed. I returned in October’16 and have been here ever since, throwing everything I had into this project. I had no experience, I had no guidance and I had no funding but we survived, we had more set backs and challenges then I care to count but we kept going and wow did we learn a lot along the way. Sophy was welcomed into the family in July last year and has blown everyone away with her craftsmanship. These women became my family and it was more than just a business. However it took a lot, it took everything and when we lost Nom earlier in the year I realized I was in over my head, I didn’t know how to cope with it, how to find the balance between professionalism and how close I’d become with all of these women. I started to unravel, I started to struggle to find the energy to keep going and I started to fall behind. I took some time to myself in February to reflect and figure out what I needed to do in order to get back to a healthy place within myself because I was drowning. I decided I needed to step back and reassess my approach to this project because if I can not support myself then I am not in a position to support these women. So in a week, I will be leaving Cambodia. This is not the end of Karakia, however over the next few months I will be rebranding and making some changes. This is not the end for these women, both Sett and Sophy will continue to create jewellery, however I will no longer be paying them a monthly wage, they will living off the sales they make at a fairtrade shop in town, now they are self sustained artisans using the skills I’ve taught them. Continued in comments.

  • 3/3 - Recently a teacher has started coming into the colony so the kids there can get at least a basic education. This is hopefully a mark of change in the community, as the kids now have the opportunity to realise that they can have a future where they do not have to beg for a living.

  • 7400 people on an average die in a year waiting for a timely donation of organs. Donum is an organization that strives to increase organ donor registrations in the US and thereby building a community of donors. We had recently launched an initiative called 'wave' wherein we were calling out Social Entrepreneurs, Think Tanks, NGOs and Government Welfare Organizations to partner with us. Under 'Wave' we wanted to offer our design thinking and creative abilities to the world at a favorable cost. One of the founders of Donum responded to our call out and reached out to us to help them with branding. We latched on to the opportunity wholeheartedly and created a brand identity and other extensions to go with. The challenge was to communicate a serious subject in the most nonchalant manner. We wanted to make the whole experience of giving, joyful. We thank Donum for giving us this opportunity. . . . . . . . . . . . #OrganDonation #Branding #Wave #DesignThinking #SocialImpact #giveback #impact #NGO

  • This week’s mantra 🌷🤲🦋 . For those of us who love to give, sometimes allowing ourselves to fully receive life’s blessings can actually feel more challenging. . It may seem counterintuitive, but it can often times feel much more vulnerable to receive (as you have to let go of control in order to do so...and being in control feels way safer, right?). . We might also have past conditioning that tells us it is “selfish” to receive. . In truth, being “mindfully selfish” and allowing yourself to receive what you deserve in life is BEAUTIFUL and puts you at your optimum to give even more to others because you are overflowing with blessings yourself. . Open up + allow yourself to be vulnerable + trust 🙏. . In the midst of helping others + making our world a better place this week, how do you plan to make yourself a priority + open up to receiving all of the amazing blessings meant especially for you? 💐💐💐

  • This word. So packed. While building my servant-centered dreams, I’ve realized that I’ve fallen short on me. I’ve dedicated time to everything else except the important things that keep me going. _____________________________________________Quiet time with God. Eating healthy. Meditating. Long walks. Secret dance parties. These are the things I need to keep me going. If you commit to self, you can commit to community and making an impact in it, but first we gotta take care of us. Thank you @tikkidawn11 and @thegoodwork for reminding me of this during one of our talks! _____________________________________________I looking forward to Mission+Mimosas this year with all of you beautiful women. There we will be able to recharge, be energized by each others spirits, and put our ideas out there to share. I can’t wait to love on your servant-centered dreams!

  • || Jesus warns, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it has hated you." (John 15:18) || Lifeway Mission International exists in regions where followers of Christ encounter religious persecution on a regular basis. Because we have faced persecution and excommunication in many forms, we are committed to serving the persecuted Church. This is the third wheel of Lifeway. . 🙏🏾 Whether a believer has been threatened, disowned, or imprisoned for their faith, Lifeway walks alongside individuals + their families — financially, physically, + spiritually — to support and encourage them. . Would you like to join the movement by serving the persecuted church? ☝🏾Check out the link in our profile to adopt a project or donate today! 💛🇰🇪🌍 || 📷: @joey_wren #lifewaymissioninternational #cabbageinthedesert

  • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Shashishekhar Rajannah (left), 22, from Bangalore, currently in Mumbai ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Occupation: Research and logistics assistant, Leader’s Quest ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Biggest expense: Rent. I’m poor in Mumbai since I moved here. I used to think I had financial troubles in Bangalore and then I moved here! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What does leisure mean to you: Going out with friends to restaurants, drinking and playing football. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What are you saving up for: This is going to sound silly, but I’m saving up for Bose Soundsport Free. ⠀⠀ _____________________________________________________⠀ ⠀ Worrin Muivah, 27 (right), from Manipur, currently in Mumbai ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Occupation: Program Coordinator, Leaders Quest ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Biggest expense: Rent ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What does leisure mean to you: Football is one of my biggest [leisure] expenses. If I play four times a month, it will cost me around INR 2,000. Others are hanging out with friends on the weekend, going out and getting drinks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What are you saving up for: As of now, I can’t save anything, so, I mean, I don’t have the means to save up, but if I had the means to save up, I would save for travel. All of my savings, all of the money that I have all of my life I’ve been using on travel, so I don’t invest much on material goods. _____________________________________________________⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ Our first Instagram series, ‘The Power of Us - Livelihoods’, features different people in a Mumbai neighborhood who were all asked the same three simple questions on leisure, expense and savings. We hope their responses challenge assumptions, surprise with their honesty and serve as a reminder that we all have more in common than we think! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This series is part of our ongoing efforts at Toast to see things differently. When we think “Livelihoods”, we want to think beyond just jobs and income. While these are critical, we believe that it’s aspirations, both current and future, that drive people and impact their well-being. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #toastinc #mumbai #india #thepowerofus_livelihoods #livelihoods #socialimpact #citylife #capturestreets ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
