  • We don’t always make the extra effort to have a special “tea-time” poetry or morning time. But it is ALWAYS worth it when we do. . A few of my kids thrive on a strict schedule... unfortunately for them, that’s their mama’s weakness 🙈. I thrive when we can mix things up and change things around. God offers us so much grace in it all. They were given to me on purpose, and I was made to be their mama on purpose. So many lessons and beauty in it all. I think there’s a good plan for our weaknesses... I want to celebrate it every once in a while. #growtogether #Hedoesntmakemistakes

  • it took me years to not get caught up in grade requirements and checklists and comparisons. as my children grew i gradually discovered that learning doesn't have a finish line and it isn't a race to get there. instead it's such a beautiful, gradual unfolding and i get to be on the front row to watch it bloom.

  • this morning we began our seventh year of homeschooling. it's a lifestyle we began reluctantly and fell utterly in love with. i'm unspeakably thankful for our days together reading, exploring, playing, baking, cleaning, moving along side by side. it's filled with bumps in the road and kinks in our plans and figuring it all out together. this year i wised up and heavily involved them in our planning. i listened to their interests, their hopes, their plans, their preferences. as a result, their level of interest and investment in the school year reflects that strongly. i can't wait to see it all play out, to discover what works, to ditch what doesn't, and to see our interests and intellects grow with the slow passage of time. happy back to homeschool my sweet 6th, 4th, and 1st graders.

  • Time is just flying with this pregnancy. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve gotten so busy with work or that’s just how it is with the second one. We are almost to the half way mark, and in two weeks we get to find out if we are welcoming another precious boy or a little girl. Any guesses? #17weekspregnant @juliechristinephotography

  • #sponsored - How do you encourage your kids to wonder? To slow down (as much as their wriggly bums will), to see things, and most importantly, to take it all in. How do you make sure they’re not living their lives digitally? Thanks to the screen time collective - phones, tablets, TV and YouTube - I think we can all agree that tearing their eyes away from the screens and turning them to the real world instead is bloody hard. As a family, we do okay (I think and hope 🤞🏼). We take a little spade on our dog walks so that Penny can stop and dig to find insects and discuss world issues with Amelia to increase her awareness, encouraging them both to ask questions, think and talk. But still, I know we could do more. These are the type of questions I put to Dame Jane Goodall when I attended the @clarkswow event, Wonder of Wisdom, to celebrate their new campaign and their new range of Back to school shoes a few weeks ago . The panel, hosted by @regyates, was made up of @jazminsawyers, @thedadlab , Aurelie Thierree and Dame Jane Goodall @janegoodallinst who features in their new advert and campaign. A group of people who inspire, encourage, live their dreams and allow themselves to wonder. My interview with Jane Goodall is over on my blog now (her answers gave me goosebumps and I’m sure they’ll do the same to you too). Link in bio #WonderofWisdom #BacktoSchool #scenefromtheceiling

  • Life is better with you + ice cream makes dreaded eye doctor visits so worth it ✨ Today my love you got set up for glasses to help strengthen your eyes but know that they will not make you any less cool. You are magical, a true wonder and so brave and you will still be able to play soccer, scooter, swim and make friends just the same...perhaps even better than now! It’s amazing how a little difference is thought of as a negativity instead of a strength in our culture but I know YOU will change all that. You’re the radest, I love you. #letterstomyson

  • I am paranoid when it comes to blankets or anything in our littles’ beds, so Eli was limited to a sleep sack until about a month ago. 😬 We took him on a mission to @target to pick out a special bedtime buddy. I had intentions of seeing which one he was drawn to, but then I saw this sloth and had to have it. 😂 At first he pretended not to care about it, but it didn’t take very long for “Friend” to be a bedtime necessity he now asks for daily. 😍 Along with a special blanket that was a baby gift from Grandma and his cup of water. 😀 We are loving so much about this age and stage with Eli—our thankful, thoughtful, spunky child. ❤️

  • With their father at their side, they are most often eager for adventure. I remember that too from my childhood. With my dad at the helm, we were always explorers. Whether it was swampy estuaries in the pnw or rainforests in the tropics, he had us wide-eyed and curious, admiring native peoples and ecosystems. My love for adventure was fed and nourished deeply by him. I can definitely say that I inspire that in my kids too. You live what you learned, right? But, there is something beautiful about a fathers role in leading children away from the safety and security of the nest. My first midwife said it best when she explained how a father should cut the umbilical cord at birth as a first initiation. She described how he will help to draw the child away from the mother, symbolizing that move from internal and familiar worlds to those of places unknown, of the outside world where boundaries of comfort are pushed and tested. Her words resonate with me so I share them here and now and I thank all those papas out there as they nurture children in that most unique way of theirs. #naturalchildhood #naturalparenting #afatherslove #wildschooling #wildandfreechildren #freerangekids #pnwonderland #folkgreen

  • I watched the most amazing family of 5 enjoy a bit of my make believe/dream playschool on Monday. It was so much better than I thought it would turn out. So many smiles and silliness going on. The mommy was so relaxed, kinda in a state of vacation mode hahaha. I wasn't able to catch every move in photos to share with you, but I am happy to have given them the freedom to roam around for a few hours. I can't get those smiles out of my head. ♡♡♡♡♡

  • I’ve been slowly but surely getting their space refreshed & ready for the school year. Little surprises have been arriving in the mail in the forms of sparkly new art supplies and interesting nature and history books, with a little bit of fantasy and a touch of spelling curriculum on the side. I have been holding them off, so to speak, because honestly, I don’t feel ready. I feel tired. And starting school tired sounds...well...tiring. 😂 We usually start the first week of September but I just don’t think they are going to let me wait til then! I came out this morning to this scene. It’s official...they are chomping at the bit to start school. All my strategically sowed seeds of excitement and shiny new tools have done exactly what I intended for them to do. Now I just need them to do the same thing for me! Saying all the “help me Jesus” prayers and pulling up my boot straps cuz like it or not...schools-a-comin’. . . #landishomeschool #adayinthelandislife

  • @growingbrave day 16: Outdoor Explore. One of my most favorite things to do with my tribe and one of our motivations for home education: to have time, hours of free time to explore outdoors. I read a book about Danish parenting (No Such Thing as Bad Weather) great read...and had tears in my eyes reading about friluftsliv which translates to “fresh air life” the author @rainorshinemamma reflected on how her grandparents inspired her to be outdoors daily even though they weren’t mountain climbing, REI gear wearing folks. They were walkers, picnickers, and star gazers. It’s so true, there is so much joy in being outdoors in all activity, and homeschooling offers us the option to do most of our studies, and exploring outdoors, living our friluftsliv ♥️

  • When the house is sparkling for tomorrow’s (second 🤨) rental inspection and every pencil is sharpened and life is, for once, just as it should be....or shouldn’t. Because life isn’t a perfect still monotony, but rather a zig-zag, sometimes wrong-side-round, up and down, ever-in-motion, mess-making, marvellous puzzle. But this afternoon I’ll take the blessed spring weather and this five year old drawing everything he dreams of. All.day.long. #wildandfreechildren #homeschoolingdownunder

  • Having these babes in my morning smoothie this past week has been a game changer... I’m a HUGE fan! Not only do wild blueberries have an intense, complex and delicious flavor, but they are full of antioxidants which help fight the oxidative stress that contributes to chronic illness and aging. Wild blueberries may also help to: 🌱 regulate blood pressure 🌱 control bad cholesterol 🌱 reduce inflammation in the body 🌱 improve motor skills and reverse short term memory loss 🌱 support eye health 🌱 prevent urinary-tract infections 🌱 I don’t know about you, but I’m sold. ❤️ Now to find some friends to go berry picking with me again tomorrow!

  • Everyone on my Facebook feed is posting their kids “ back to school” photos with their chalkboards with their chalkboard paint and their perfect hair and their brand new backpacks, for their first day of school- and the parents with coffee in their hand and their sunglasses at the drop off line. Power to you, because that AINT ME! Yo! I’m over here, unshowered, sleep deprived, in the same shirt I’ve been in for three days with spit up, smoothie from today, last nights rice, and mazi’s drool from Sunday- talking about..clean up the legos, let’s straighten up this play room, let’s prep dinner together, let’s pray for daddy’s EMT test tomorrow (👨🏽‍🚒) let’s figure out what oils to buy for Retto, let’s empty the dishwasher, let’s put clothes away, let’s do math, let’s spell any word that comes to your mind, let’s pray again for daddy’s test tomorrow, let’s match some socks, let’s practice writing our names, let’s talk faith, let’s figure out what type of popsicles you want to make, let’s figure out who you want to penpal next, let’s pray for daddy’s test again, and watch Mazi walk all over. We homeschool, we unschool, and we do what we want.. We’re unscheduled, unrehearsed, undone- but one thing we are is TOGETHER. That’s what I wanted, to be able to be HERE, documenting everything, drowning in books, measuring them on the wall, playing outside, cooking them every meal, watching them grow, studying their interactions, helping and healing hearts and relationships between all of them. Theres no magic book for this, and I’m VERY type A- but if I’ve learned anything- it’s the more I fly by the seat of my pants- the better we turn out. We’re growing, we’re learning, and most importantly we’re LOVING. I cannot even process how much they have grown in a year. I showed them a picture of a year ago-Tazo immediately said,” omg we were so WITTLE! And I love it-mazi was zero!” 😭 They have grown so much, and no day is exactly as “planned” and we’re no where near perfection, but we can try right?!! Here’s to another amazing school year, that technically never ended to begin with. 🌿 3rd grade, first grade, 4, 2 and 1. #frattinipack • • • Shirts by @kidsbykisse

  • I suppose most paths seem more certain in hindsight, but our decision to homeschool so many years ago was anything but sure-footed. I think in the end we told one another, “it is only Kindergarten.” I remembered that thought yesterday as I snipped his hair on the porch at the beginning of his tenth grade [homeschool] year—how so much of this journey has been formed by simply showing up, bare palms turned to the sky with a willing “yes” in my heart. Olive was born that same year we first began. She was quiet and curious, holding back words until in later years they came pouring forth, always with intense laughter and spirit. Yesterday she kept us company, reading aloud to us from an abridged version of the Odyssey, asking how to pronounce Telemachus, wondering why Odysseus dreamed of his son as a man. Whatever I imagined homeschooling to be or not to be so many years ago, it still surprises me with delight now. I have decided for all the how-to manuals written on the topic, some paths are best when they unfold only a step or day or year at a time.

  • Only 17 pages in and already so many golden nuggets. 🌟 “This parenting gig is exceedingly important — you and I both know that. If making meaningful and lasting connections with our kids requires that we be fully present and that we focus on what matters most, then there’s one question we need to answer for ourselves: What matters most?” 🌟 “Read aloud. You will never, ever regret the time you spend reading with your {child}.” Took this truth to heart tonight and even though we got home late, I climbed into my big bed with my 4 kiddos and read the sweetest book, a library book that’s been sitting in our home for 4 weeks that I hadn’t even looked at yet. It talked about how friendship was worth the wait for this small blue whale. He found joy in his journey despite what could have been a lonely road. Beautifully written and beautifully illustrated. And so tonight Sarah Mackenzie was right, I did not regret that moment one bit. I connected with all 4 of my kids. I felt love. I felt peace. I was reassured that even with my shortcomings, at least in that moment I was a present, good mother. Mind blown. 💥 Here’s to lots of more memories reading aloud with my children.

  • Our theme this year is, “I Can Do Hard Things.” Sharing our homeschool curriculum and itinerary for this upcoming new year! We are definitely ready to embrace a new season. A new year. And new adventures. We are going to work on some core subjects, but spend our best energy on life skills, learning the principles of hard work, family contribution, making things with our hands, bible lessons, exploring nature and continuing our efforts in service to others. *and a couple special lessons dedicated to manners and chivalry* Daily chores will continue to be a priority and completed even before book-learnin👈😉 (this is part of family contribution and life skills). Thank you @parenting.magic for the awesome Chore Charts 👏 (got em laminated 👌🏻) Following many recommendations, we are taking a fun and outside of the box approach to Math with Life of Fred. I connected with these books practically at first glance. I think Fred will win over my boys in our first lesson 👌🏻 Gabriel will also be taking Brave Writer, STEM, Music Sac Philharmonic. Jude will be continuing Kindergarten while accepting some First grade challenges. Focusing on reading and writing fluency. Both boys will be burnin some boy energy in Sports Ed. (And continuing at their belt levels in Karate, if we can manage it) Finn will be continuing his lofty preschool career...this is his senior year! Then it’s TK next Fall! Lots of continued counting, sorting, and playing. Letters, phonics and playing. And playing. And climbing. And learning to wear clothes. And playing. It will be Finn’s first year in karate. And he turns 4 this October. Big things happening. Benny will be an observer this year. While reaching all of his first year milestones, with Momma and brothers cheering him on! All boys will be doing lots of handicrafts and cooking at home, thanks to Rooted Childhood by @practicallyhippie (I’m super excited for this!) And we will spend our Monday mornings hiking and nature walking with songs, stories and new friends, thanks to Trail Mix and Stix, outdoor program. We will be busy. It won’t be always be easy. But... We Can Do Hard Things. 🙌 And This, is homeschool.
